Estre scores maiden Porsche Supercup at Monza

Frenchman Kevin Estre scored his maiden Porsche Supercup win at the series’ Monza round whilst reigning champion Rene Rast increased his advantage atop the standings.

The duo spent much of the race duelling for the lead before Estre finally made a break at the front. With the Attempto Racing driver not amongst the title contenders Rast settled for runner-up spot and thus extended his points lead. Estre meanwhile guaranteed himself rookie of the year honours.

“That was a tough race." said the Frenchman, who had not stood on a Porsche Supercup podium before Monza. "I tried to overtake René in the first laps but there just wasn’t enough room. So I had to be patient.

“This victory and winning the rookie classification already makes the season a triumph for the whole team. I want to thank them here and now for their fantastic support. Now I can’t wait for the final in Abu Dhabi.”

The podium was completed by guest driver Alessandro Balzan, who beat Norbert Siedler to the final rostrum spot. Nick Tandy was fifth with Belgian victor Kuba Giermaziak sixth.

Elsewhere title contender Sean Edwards saw his championship hopes badly dented after suffering a nasty accident whilst dueling for position. The Brit went sideways and in to the barriers, immediately ending his race.

Rast now leads the standings by 17 points from Polish racer Giermaziak. Siedler is a further two in arrears whilst Edwards now finds himself 25 points down on the German. Two races remain with a double-header season finale set for Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina venue (November 12/13),
