Porsche Supercup champ Rast makes it three in a row with Silverstone triumph

Reigning Porsche Supercup champion Rene Rast scored his third successive victory as the series visited Silverstone, sending the German to the top of the points standings for the first time this season.

Starting from pole, Rast made a perfect start to lead in to turn one. Meanwhile team-mate and fellow front-row starter Norbert Siedler got a poor launch, dropping behind both Kevin Estre and local favourite Nick Tandy.

Tandy soon made his way past Estre and began to chase down Rast, who had built a lead whilst his pursuers squabbled over P2. The Brit slowly cut the deficit, and by the final laps was right on Rast's tail.

Starting the final lap a move for the lead seemed inevitable, but Tandy ran wide at Abbey and conceded any chance of making an assault on Rast. The German thus came home to complete a hat-trick of wins over the past three events, making for his sluggish start to the campaign.

“That was a tough race,” admitted Rast afterwards. “I got away well at the start and was able to pull away a little, but then Nick got faster and faster. Luckily I could hold on to my first place to the flag. It was a fantastic weekend for our team.”

“Obviously it would have been great to win my home race," commented runner-up Tandy. "But second place isn’t bad."

Behind the lead duo Siedler made his way past Estre to complete the podium, the Frenchman nevertheless scoring the best result of his rookie Supercup season. He was followed home by Christian Engelhardt and Jeroen Bleekemolen, both of whom exerted late pressure on the rookie but failed to make a move stick. Verva Racing team-mates Stefan Rosina and Kuba Giermaziak took seventh and eighth respectively, with Patrick Huisman and erstwhile points leader Sean Edwards completing the top ten.

Rast now heads the standings by 11 points from Edwards, who has Tandy just a further two points in arrears. The series' next event takes place at German venue the Nurburgring (July 24).
