PSC: Tandy closes in with Hungary win

Nick Tandy moved to within 10 points of the Porsche Supercup championship lead after his second victory of the season at the Hungaroring.

The Briton’s win was also good enough to give him the Rookie title with two rounds to spare after heading home fellow countryman Sean Edwards by two seconds with title leader Rene Rast third.

Tandy led away from the start while behind carnage reined as first Norbert Siedler and Stefan Rosina came together at the first corner before a huge four-car pile-up one turn later removed Alessandro Zampedri, Matt Halliday, Sebastiaan Bleekemolen and William Langhorne from the race.

The resulting five-lap Safety Car period didn’t hamper Tandy though who promptly pulled away when the race re-started, Edwards giving a valiant chase without ever getting close enough to pressurise the Konrad driver.

“It was fantastic”, said Tandy. “It’s a terrific feeling to be on the top again. Already in Hockenheim we hoped for the victory and we were really disappointed after the retirement. Now, only one week later, we fetched the pole as well as the victory. That’s exactly the answer we wanted to give.

“We fetched the maximum points, now everything can happen in the remaining two races. “It’s fine to be the rookie-champion, but to be honest, that’s not enough for me – I want more.”

Rast was third ahead of Al Faisal Lechner Racing  team mate and reigning champion Jeroen Bleekemolen with Jaap van Lagen completing the top five.

Pole Kuba Giermaziak came home sixth while Patrick Huisman and Jan Seyffarth enjoyed a lively battle for seventh, the Supercup’s leading all-time race-winner coming out on top this time. Sascha Maassen and Tim Bridgeman completed the top ten.
