Giermaziak scores maiden Porsche Supercup triumph in Hungary

Verva Racing’s Kuba Giermaziak scored his maiden Porsche Supercup victory in Sunday’s Hungarian event, whilst Sean Edwards assumed the championship lead following problems for erstwhile table topper Rene Rast (Lechner Racing).

Polish-born Giermaziak ran second to Rast early in the rain-affected race as poleman Kevin Estre (Attempt) slithered in to the gravel on the opening lap.

Reigning champion Rast entered the event on a four-race winning streak, but this would be broken as the German made a series of mistakes to drop himself down the order, handing Giermaziak the lead in the process. From here the 21-year-old kept an impressively cool head to pull away at the front of the field and win by 18 seconds.

Behind him former series champion Jeroen Bleekemolen (Team Abu Dhabi) found a way past Edwards to take second at the flag, the Dutchman’s first podium finish of the season. Edwards completed the rostrum.

Fourth went to Norbert Siedler (Lechner), ahead of recovering polesitter Estre, Robert Lukas (Attempto), Stefan Rosina in the second VERVA entry and Team Bleekemolen’s Alessandro Zampedri. Nick Tandy (Konrad) and Khaled Al Qubaisi (Team Abu Dhabi) completed the top ten.

Rast meanwhile dropped out the race with mechanical gremlins and as such surrenders his championship advantage to Edwards. The Brit holds a single point lead over the Lechner driver with four races over three rounds remaining. Siedler is third, just nine points off the lead, whilst first time winner Giermaziak also appears to be in contention, sitting fourth and 16 points off top spot.

The next race takes place at famed Belgian venue Spa-Francorchamps (August 28).
