GT Open: Tiemann condition improves

German driver Marcel Tiemann has been transferred to a hospital in Munich as his condition improves following his frightening International GT Open accident at Imola last month.

The 36-year-old was transferred by air ambulance to the Grosshadern Universitätklinikum from the Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna where he had been treated since the incident.

He remains in an induced coma as he continues to recover from the severe head trauma caused when his Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS hit the wall after being tapped by another car, but doctors in Munich plan to progressively wake him over the coming days. He has also made a good recovery from the other injuries sustained in the crash, namely a broken vertebrae and broken rib.

Doctors in Bologna described his condition as ‘out of danger’ although he is set for lengthy rehabilitation process.

“The medical team in Bologna did an outstanding job, for which we are deeply grateful” read a statement issued by Tiemann’s family.

Ernst Moser, team principal of Phoenix Racing added: “We are relieved about the evolution of Marcel’s conditions and doctors are optimistic about the prospects of a full recovery.

“Marcel is not only an excellent driver but also a great and friendly guy, highly appreciated by everybody. We are absolutely overwhelmed by the support and well-wishing messages received from friends, colleagues and fans.”

Everyone at Motors TV wishes Marcel the very best for his recovery.
