Undoubtedly one of the success stories of the decade, the GT3 category, launched in December 2005 with the FIA GT3 European Championship, spreads like wildfire. The progress from a mad idea, via an extremely successful series, to a category in its own right, taking over many national GT Championships, took just over a year.
Now GT3 is the place to be for national teams, and the FIA GT3 European Championship has become their meeting place on the international stage, visiting a variety of European tracks as well as an overseas fi nale in an exotic location.
The FIA GT3 European Championship is a ‘Cup of Cups’ for the latest GT production models, aff ordable racing for non-professional drivers, using the performance balancing techniques pioneered by the GT1 category of the FIA GT Championship. The drivers compete both within their own Manufacturer’s cup, and for overall honours, with two onehour races per meeting, including an obligatory driver change.
