The Dutch Supercar Challenge proved to be another hit with British fans at the weekend as the eclectic sports car series visited Donington Park for four races across the GT, Supersport I, Supersport II and Sport classes.
Diederik Sijthoff took victory in the opening-hour long race in his Speedtec Motorsport Dodge Viper after long-time leader Martin Short retired his Mosler with electrical problems towards the end of the race.
Short had immediately jumped into the lead from third at the start and led by more than 30 seconds after his compulsory pit stop. The British driver’s advantage was wiped out 15 minutes from the end of the race when a Safety Car was called after Charlie Frijn’s Porsche spilled oil on the track, but he was pulling clear again before his untimely retirement.
Sijthoff therefore grabbed victory having passed the Marcos LM 600 of Cor Euser on the restart. He then held off his countryman’s attacks towards the end of the race to cross the line just 0.158 seconds clear.
The Brinkmann Motorsport Audi R8 LMS of Ardi van der Hoek and Danny van Dongen completed the overall podium, while Supersport I class honours went to the JR Motorsport BMW M3 Silhouette of Bert van der Zweerde.
The second race saw van der Hoek and van Dongen claim victory ahead of Short.
Sijthoff led the first part of the race but lost his advantage following a Safety Car when he reacted slowly on the restart and both Euser and Short, who had climbed to third from 14th on the grid, got past.
Euser’s race was over soon after as he retired from the lead having suffered contact while lapping slower traffic and Short lost time during his pit stop due to a fuel issue meaning van der Hoek and van Dongen took over at the head of the field.
Van Dongen took the chequered flag over 40 seconds clear of Short at the finish while the Rudolph Racing Corvette of Roger and Niels Grouwels inherited the final podium spot near towards the end of the rase when Dave Basu spun his similar Zero R Racing car.
The Supersport I class win went to Michael Donovan driving an In2Racing Porsche 997 GT3.
In a pair of exciting Supersport II and Sport category races Koen Bogaerts and Mark van der Aa won twice overall in their European Staffing Racing BMW 132 GTR, while Guillaume Schulz (Team TDM Lotus Exige Cup) and Richard van den Bos (JR Motorsport, BMW E36) shared the Sport victories.
