Brit GT: Modena eyeing series comeback

Team Modena is planning a comeback to the British GT Championship with a fleet of self-built Lamborghini Gallardos.

The Wycombe-based squad, which will rebrand as the Modena Group, previously competed in the series with Lamborghinis in 2008 and also ran an Aston Martin DBR9 and then a Ferrari 430 in the GT1 and GT2 classes of the Le Mans Series.

The Gallardos the squad plans to use for its British return are all ex-Super Trofeo race cars which the team hopes it will be allowed to modify to GT3 specification and then put through the national homologation process rather than with the FIA, for which Reiter Engineering is already the nominated GT3 builder for Lamborghinis.

“We’re using our old cars to train people and we could run up to five Trofeo cars in British GT,” said Modena chairman Graham Schultz. “We’d need to modify the cars, but I can buy direct from Lamborghini so there’s no need to go through Reiter.”

The team is also planning to return to the Le Mans 24 Hours and Le Mans Series with its GT2 Ferrari in the future.
