Brit GT: Knockhill axed from 2011 calendar

Next season’s British GT Championship will be disputed over seven rounds, series organisers have confirmed.

SRO boss Stephane Ratel conceded that Scotland’s round at Knockhill had been struck from the calendar following requests from a number of teams to reduce the number of races on the grounds of cost.

“We have been through a tough time in British GT,” he told Motorsport News. “We will not go to Knockhill, but we are pleased with other elements of the schedule and the category is moving in the right direction, although it’s still not at the same levels as domestic series in France or Belgium.”

The championship was hit by the credit crunch last season with grid numbers well down on previous years. But Ratel is confident that the shoots of recovery are now becoming evident.

“There is an increase in the types of GT3 car people can use, and we would like to think that manufacturers might even begin to see the domestic championships as a first stepping stone in their programmes,” he said. “Things are certainly coming along well for next year.”
