Brit GT: Century Motorsport joins GT4 class

Ginetta G50 Cup champions Century Motorsport will field a car in the British GT Championship this season.

The Midlands-based outfit will run a single G50 in the GT4 category for team founder and reigning G50 Cup champion, Nathan Freke, and Danish female driver, Vibe Smed.

The team will enter every round except the trip to Spa-Francorchamps in June and their entry comes following a link up with Chad Racing, for whom Smed is a junior driver.

“We are very pleased to have signed Vibe to co-drive with me in the series,” Freke said. “The combination will enable us to run at the front and while missing a round will make winning the series difficult it is not impossible.”

Smed, 22, has prior racing experience in Britcar and Formula Palmer in the UK, and Formula Ford in her homeland, and excited about stepping up to the British GT Championship.

“I'm looking forward to my third consecutive year in British motorsport,” she said. “I've enjoyed every bit of it: the tracks are great, and the teams and organisers are very professional.

“Racing with Nathan, whom I know as a first-class race driver, is the best possible opportunity to be competitive in 2010.”

Chad Racing’s Piers Masarati explained that the move was part of the team’s plan to build a ladder towards international sports car racing.

“Vibe is a Chad Racing junior driver and we are looking to develop a clear route for drivers into international sports cars via GT4,” he said. “Chad is running a large British GT and European programme in GT3, so it made sense for us to form a relationship with Nathan and Century Motorsport.

“Nathan, as we know from last year, is an exceptional driver and Vibe will develop massively from driving with him this year. Century and Chad are both young teams with the same values and I'm sure this won't be the only collaboration.”
