Jaguar to develop GT3-spec F-type

Jaguar are set to return to sportscar racing with an F-type developed to GT3 regulations and run by either Williams or RML, according to Autosport.

The report says that a number of bids have been made to run the British car manufacturer’s programme, but that those offers have been whittled down to the F1 team and RML, who operate the Chevrolet World Touring Car project that will cease to be at the end of this year.

The article states that as the road-going version of the F-type does not go on sale until next spring, the racer is unlikely to appear until the second half of 2013 before being made available to customers for use in 2014.

Jaguar has previously supported the development of two different GT racing-spec XKR models in recent years. The Apex outfit built a car for GT3 but the programme came to an end after the team owner Richard Lloyd died in a plane crash in 2008. American squad RSR then developed a version for the ALMS and ran the car at Le Mans in 2010, but it was unsuccessful.
