Team WFR to concentrate on manufacturing

SPEED Euroseries front-running squad Team WFR has withdrawn its pair of factory WF03 chassis from the championship with immediate effect as it looks to concentrate on its activities as a manufacturer.

The news comes in the wake of Joey Foster’s recent high-speed accident in testing at Spa-Francorchamps which saw the British driver suffer broken vertebrae.

“Team WFR has brought forward its plans to concentrate on the manufacture of its CN class WF03 sports prototype and allow its newly appointed agents, Xero Competition to take up the mantle of competing the car in the current SPEED EuroSeries,” read a statement from the team.

“It was always the intention of the factory to withdraw from competition once the WF03 design had been proven, and although the timeframe for this had not been determined, the domination at Paul Ricard and the immediate demand for customer cars has meant that the decision has been brought forward.”

The team also confirmed that, while the cause of Foster’s accident, which happened at the flat-out Eau Rouge corner, has yet to be determined, the chassis he was driving has been withdrawn from use as a ‘sensible precaution’.

Foster meanwhile, who admitted after the accident that he has considered retiring from the sport having also suffered a similar injury when racing in German F3 in 2006, is currently at home convalescing as he recovers from surgery.

"We are all delighted that Joey is now back at home following a successful operation,” said WFR Managing Director Myles Schofield. “I am in regular communication with him and he is very positive. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him racing again in the not too distant future.”

Xero Competition, which was due to run a customer WF03 chassis for the first time at Spa before Foster’s accident saw the team withdraw from the race, has now received a second chassis and will run both cars in the next round of the SPEED Euroseries at Donington Park next month.
