SPEED: GTs and Class B for Silverstone race

SPEED series organisers have announced a number of changes in regulations for the season finale at Silverstone next month.

The Le Mans-style racing championship, formerly known as VdeV UK, is looking at ways to increase grid numbers which have fallen in 2009.

The series usually caters for just CN prototype machinery, but will open its doors to GT3 and GT4 cars for the three-hour Silverstone race. A new ‘Class B’ for older EP3-engined CN sports proto cars has also been introduced. If successful, the changes could be carried into the 2010 season.

“We’re contacting as many GT3/4 teams as we can to extend the invitation to them to join up at Silverstone,” said SPEED organiser Oliver McCrudden.

“We ran a Chad Racing Kia Silhouette at the Snetterton 6 hours and any reservations about having such cars on the grid were quickly expelled. In terms of excitement, participation and from a marketing angle, creating a SPEED ‘Le Mans Lite’ style event is something we are exploring.”

Counter Solutions Racing drivers Rob Garofall and Chris Bialan lead the standings heading into the final round, 20 points clear of RLR Motorsport pairing Barry Gates and Anthony Dunn and TFL Racing’s Sarah Reader and Graham Fennymore.
