SPEED: Brundle set for prototype debut

Single-seater racer Alex Brundle will make his sportscar prototype debut in the SPEED Series at Silverstone next weekend.

The British F3 racer, son of ex-F1 star Martin, will link up with Jota Sport to drive a Ligier JS49 in the races that will support the Le Mans Series’ Autosport 1000kms.

The 20-year-old will partner title chaser Simon Dolan for the two, 90-minute races as Dolan’s regular co-driver, and Jota Sport co-owner, Sam Hancock will skip the round to concentrate on his commitments with Aston Martin Racing in the main LMS event.

Brundle admitted that the move may lead to a more permanent switch to sportscar racing in the future, although says he hasn’t yet made up his mind on his future career direction.

“It’s going to be a difficult decision if it means we go that way,” he told Autosport. “It will be nice to get some experience on that side of things.

“You’ve got to perform in single-seaters and that’s still our first choice, but we’ve got to keep our options open.”

Hancock, who will share AMR’s LMP1 prototype with Juan Barazi in the 1000kms, said that Brundle had already impressed the team in a recent test.

“Alex tested at Snetterton last month and, as you would expect, was bang on the pace in no time at all.

“This is an informal arrangement at the moment and a chance for him to try sports cars.”
