LMS adds GTC class for 2012

A new class for lower-specification GT cars will be introduced in time for the start of next season’s Le Mans Series, championship bosses announced yesterday.

Following last week’s meeting between LMS representatives and manufacturers, a GTC class – similar to that currently run in the American Le Mans Series – will see machinery closer to its road-going counterparts compete in the championship for the first time.

Those models eligible have been taken from existing one-make series with the Ferrari F430 Challenge, Lotus Evora GT4/GTC and Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 2010 and 2011 invited to compete next season, albeit with slight endurance modifications.

An LMS statement read: “Like for the Formula Le Mans, the aim of this new class is to offer to new teams and new drivers the opportunity to access the GT Endurance world at a European level for a limited budget.”

Rules governing drivers will be the same as the existing GTE Am class which allows for just one Platinum or Gold standard driver per two or three man crew.

The decision comes after the LMS dropped the LMP1 class from its field in response to dwindling entries as teams opted to join the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, which will become a fully blown World Championship next season.

While no 2012 calendar has yet been revealed, bosses did confirm that the championship would be decided over five 1000km or six hour races across Europe.
