ALMS: Extreme Speed Ferraris switch to E85

Extreme Speed Motorsports became the latest American Le Mans Series squad to switch to cellulosic E85R fuel at last weekend’s Utah Grand Prix.

The ALMS rookie squad joined fellow Ferrari outfit Risi Competizione in using the alternative energy source, meaning ten of the 13 cars on the GT2 grid at Miller Motorsports Park were using the fuel.

“It’s mostly a development by Ferrari to improve the performance of the cars,” said Derek Granison, ESM’s team manager. “And everyone in the paddock wants to go green as well.

“We’re still looking over the data and compiling information. Generally, it has shown to be improvement that needed to be made.”

The ALMS has proved to be an advocate of ‘green racing’ in recent years with its rules allowing automobile manufacturers to test and develop new technologies on the track. It also approves the use of five alternative fuels, E10, cellulosic E85, clean diesel, isobutanol and hybrid technologies.
