IHBA DRAGBOAT:
Fans of all things rudderless will be pleased as punch to see the IHBA Drag Boat series come to Motors TV this winter. In 1982, having pushed the envelope’s limits as far as possible on land, the Americans looked to water as the setting for the next chapter in strictly straight line motorsport. What they came up with survives today as a remarkably simple format; get from one end of the lake to other as fast as possible.

>Top Fuel Hydro: 7000bhp and a top speed of over 250mph. Twin propeller. Covers a standing quarter mile in 4.5sec.
>Top Alcohol Hydro: 3000bhp and a top speed of over 230mph. Single propeller. Covers a standing quarter mile in just over 5sec.
>Top Alcohol Flat: Flat bottomed with top speed of 170mph.
>Pro Mod: Flat bottomed or hydroplane. Run as close to 7secs as possible.
>Pro Competition Eliminator
>Pro Eliminator: Fastest boats without safety canopy. Run as close to 8secs as possible.
>Eliminator: Ultra light hulls weighing less than 300lbs. Run as close to 9secs as possible.
>Modi?ed Eliminator: Outboard and in-board motors. Run as close to 10secs as possible.
>Stock Eliminator: 600bhp. Run as close to 11secs as possible.
>River Racer
As you can imagine, Drag Boat basics are similar to that of their terra firma counterparts, although there are minor differences. A the start for instance, both craft line up side by side with a timed count down only commencing once both are completely straight.
