WSBK: Spies takes double, Haga injured
Ben Spies won twice at Donington as championship leader Noriyuki Haga was taken to hospital after a bad crash.
Spies boosted his championship hopes as the former AMA Superbike Champion’s two wins cut Haga’s points lead from 48 to 14, as the Japanese rider ended race 2 in a Derby hospital with a suspected fractured vertebrae.
The American Yamaha rider started race 1 on pole position and completed his ninth victory of the season in dominant fashion as he led all 23-laps from lights-to-flag.
He didn’t have things all his own way as Aprilia’s Max Biaggi was in close attendance throughout the race, but the Italian almost lost second place near the end when a fuel pick-up problem in the final 200 metres saw him coast over the line.
Haga (Ducati) scored his 100th career podium in third, but was never in a position to challenge the front two. Leon Haslam (Honda) edged a tightly-fought all-British battle for fourth ahead of Ducati’s Shane Byrne, with Shinya Nakano in sixth.
Spies produced a similarly dominant display in race 2, but this time had no pressure from behind, quickly pulling out a seven-second lead which he controlled all the way to the finish.
As the Texan romped clear at the front, there was disaster for Haga, who was running second on lap 5 and trying to close the gap when he crashed heavily and was taken to hospital with several injuries, including a suspected broken vertebrae.
Haga’s misfortune allowed Haslam to grab a popular podium at his home race, holding off Michel Fabrizio, who kept his own championship hopes alive in third after a gear selector problem limited him to 12th in race 1. Byrne produced another solid performance in fourth ahead of countryman Tom Sykes.
British Superbike regulars Leon Camier and James Ellison both enjoyed good races for Airwaves Yamaha, finishing sixth and eighth respectively. BMW’s Ruben Xaus finished ninth to secure a double-points finish for the German manufacturer, but there was disaster for Aprilia as both their riders crashed, Biagi cracking a bone in his foot but remounting to finish 21st.
“This was a picture perfect weekend for me,” said Spies, “although I know Haga had a big crash and I hope he’s ok. That’s not the way you want to do it but you’ve got to capitalise when things go wrong.”
