WSBK: Positive news on Haga injury
The injury sustained by World Superbike Championship leader Noriyuki Haaga is not as serious as first feared.
The Japanese Ducati rider secured his 100th WSBK podium finish in race 1 at Donington Park but ended the weekend in Derby Royal Infirmary after crashing badly in race 2.
It was originally feared that Haga had suffered a broken vertebrae, but a further CT scan has revealed that the damage to the T8 and T9 vertebrae could be the remains of a previous incident. The news meant the cancellation of a scheduled operation.
“This is good news,” said Ducati Xerox Team Manager Davide Tardozzi. “Nori will still undergo an operation on the ulna bone in right forearm because it is a displaced fracture and there is also a suspected fracture of the shoulder blade. However if he doesn’t need to have an operation to the vertebrae he could get away with a month’s rest.”
Haga had a stable night in the Pre-Op assessment ward and will undergo the arm surgery today. Doctors will investigate his shoulder injury further to find the cause of pain he is still suffering.
If things go well, the Ducati team are not ruling out the possibility of Noriyuki returning to the track in time for the next round at Brno on 26 July.
