So the legend goes that in the mid 1970s a promoter by the name of Dave Coombs stumbled upon the small West Virginia town of Davis. Looking at the rugged terrain, he thought it the perfect spot to hold a motorcycle race. It would be a tough one mind, one that only the strongest riders and machines could finish. The Blackwater 100 was born and with it, a future legend in American off-road racing. Soon, quads and trikes were added whilst the five hour events were scaled down to three. By the 1990s, the now rebranded Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) was enjoying country-wide appeal as spectators flocked to see the best riders tackle the harshest trails on the most muscular machinery going. One of the most physically demanding sports in the world, Cross-Country riders must navigate rugged terrain such as woods, mud, dirt, rocks and jumps for nearly three hours, while racing against the best talent in the world. Small wonder then, that it’s proved so popular.

13 rounds appear on this season’s calendar as more than 1500 riders travel the length and breadth of America in pursuit of off-road racing’s greatest prize.

There are six races held across the weekend with each competitor leaving the start gate at one minute intervals.

Starts are often unruly affairs with riders forming a close-knit line across the track behind a short ‘gate’. When this gate falls, it’s a mad dash to the first corner where a bottle neck affect often leads to multiple accidents.

Manx-born rider David Knight will look to retain the bike title he’s won for the past two years in 2009 whilst aptly named American Bill Ballance will be hoping to snare an amazing 10th successive ATV crown.
