MX3: Campano takes lead with Slovenia win

Carlos Campano took the lead of the MX3 World Championship with victory in round 9 of the 2010 season in Slovenia.

The Yamaha rider won both motos on his way to overall victory, which he took from Husqvarna’s local hero Matevz Irt. Previous points leader Alex Salvini was third overall.

Irt led the first heat in front of his home crowd at the start, but he couldn’t hold off Campano who pulled away to a 7.233 second win. Irt held off a charging Michael Staufer (KTM) for second, while Martin Zerava (Honda) was fourth.

Salvini had some technical troubles with his Husqvarna bike, but still managed to pip Milko Potisek (Honda) to fifth to limit his losses in the points race.

Irt led again in the second race, this time ahead of fellow Slovenian Saso Kragelj (Yamaha), but Campano fought his way through the field after a bad start and passed both to move ahead by the finish.

Irt held on for second, while Salvini denied Kragelj a home podium by stealing into third place.

“When I saw this track I knew I can ride fast here," Campano said. "My team has been working hard the whole week because we had problems with the bike. I really like thank to everyone in the team. We improved the bike and everything was going well today. I had a good feeling. Irt started very fast but I passed him. It was really a successful weekend specially because I took advantage in front of Salvini.”

Campano’s maximum points-haul leaves him 16 clear of Salvini with just three rounds remaining.
