Red Bull Teka KTM star Antonio Cairoli completed his quest for a third successive MX World Championship with victory in Sunday’s European Grand Prix.
The Italian rider didn’t score a moto win at the Gaildorf circuit, instead benefiting for the inconsistency of his rivals to wrap up the 43rd overall triumph of his career.
Russian Evgeny Bobryshev (Honda) took victory in the opening run with a dominant performance. His display was made all the more impressive by the fact that Bobryshev had injured his head and neck on a camper post the previous day and was heavily strapped up for the event. Second went to Xavier Boog (Kawasaki) with Cairoli a measured third.
Christophe Pourcel (Kawasaki) would score the win the moto two, beating Cairoli by some four seconds with Anthony Boissiere (Kawasaki) completing the top three. With Bobryshev down in eighth, and Pourcel having crashed out of the first moto, Cairoli duly took the overall win that seals his title.
Bobryshev’s 1-8 result was good enough for overall second, with Boog third. The Frenchman took sixth in moto two to seal his place on the overall podium.
Though the title has been settled in Cairoli’s favour runner-up spot is still very much up for grabs. Incumbent Steve Frossard currently sits just 11 points clear of Clement Desalle, whilst Max Nagl and Bobryshev are also close enough to be considered contenders. The quartet will do battle for a final time at next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix (September 11)
