Villopoto makes it three in a row with Texan triumph

Ryan Villopoto continued to stamp his authority on this year's AMA Supercross championship with a third successive victory in Saturday's trip to Texas.

Round seven of the campaign came from the Lone Star State's iconic Cowboys Stadium and it was again the Monster Energy Kawasaki star who claimed the top spot on the rostrum, strengthening his bid to claim a second successive series crown.

The main event saw Jeff Alessi lead away from the start but quickly passed by Villopoto and Honda's Chad Reed. Aussie Reed, the 2004 and '08 AMA SX champ, would challenge Villopoto for the lead in the early stages, but on lap seven crashed out of contention, handing a comfortable victory to his adversary.

Meanwhile 2010 title-winner Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM) would claim second with the second Monster Kawasaki of Jake Weimer third.

"The track really broke down out there tonight, and when that happens, you have to be smart and play it safe," Villopoto said afterwards in reference to the Texan venue's surface.

"It's a bummer for Chad," Villopotom added of his rival's crash. "I am looking forward to next weekend in Atlanta."

Villopoto points lead has now risen to 13 points over Dungey. Reed is now 30 in arrears whilst James 'Bubba' Stewart - who was a troubled sixth in Texas - is a full 42 points off top spot in fourth.
