AMA SX
The American’s love their entertainment. Superbowl, Nascar, Wrestling; sport repackaged with gimmicks for a mass audience. That’s why when European imported Motocross took the country by storm in the late 1960s, the core sporting elements weren’t deemed glamorous enough. So what do you do? Bring the bikes to the people, that’s what, and, while you’re at it, throw away the ‘Moto’ and come up with something a damn sight more impressive like ‘Super’. Nearly 40 years on from the first stadium event held in California’s somewhat optimistically named Coliseum and the apprentice has become the master. AMA SX is now the foremost Supercross championship on the planet, a world championship in its own right with the power to draw the very best riders from the four corners of the globe each and every year. Retaining the best of the outdoor bits – jumps, whoops and dirt – the 80,000 capacity crowds bring an altogether greater atmosphere and TV spectacle to each of the 18 rounds to be held across America in 2009.

AMA Supercross: >250cc 2 Stroke / 450cc 4 Stroke
Supercross Lites: >125cc 2 Stroke / 250cc 4 Stroke

There are two heats, a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and Main Event (ME) per Supercross meet. Each heat contains 20 different riders, the top nine finishers of which will progress to the ME. The combined 22 “losers” will then enter the LCQ for the remaining two spaces on the ME grid. In Lites, four Last Chance Qualifiers progress to the 22 strong ME grid.

Supercross: Each heat lasts eight laps, the LCQ six and the ME, 20. Lites: Each heat lasts six laps, the LCQ four and the ME, 15

Starts are often unruly affairs with riders forming a close-knit line across the track behind a short ‘gate’. When this gate falls, it’s a mad dash to the first corner where a bottle neck affect often leads to multiple accidents.

AMA National and FIM World Supercross titles are presented in the Supercross class whilst the AMA Supercross Lites class is split into US eastern and western regional divisions.

Given their close similarity, many riders contest both SX and MX championships in the same season. SX riders are also eligible for the MX sanctioned Motocross of Nations – the annual World Cup of scrambling.

Jeremy McGrath’s seven AMA titles are a record in Supercross, followed by Ricky Carmichael’s haul of five.
